One-of-a-kind 1975 Commer Campervan
for Sale - £8,995 ono
This beautiful beast is our pride and joy, but sadly – as we write this through
a haze of tears - time has come for us to part. With new family developments underway, unfortunately we need to buy a BORING
car and also start saving money.
We are looking for the perfect
person to come and give our beloved Charley a new home.
Charley
is a 1975 Commer campervan with some very special modifications. Overall we have spent an extra £7,000 on getting him
to the jawdropping condition he’s in now, including:
High-Top
We had the high-top added from a 1968 Commer – it enables you stand up full
height in the van and also provides extra storage and shelving. All adding to the special house-on-wheels feel. There is also
the possibility of adding a pullout bed above the cab so you can sleep 4, but we haven’t done it yet. As it stands a
small child can sleep up there.
Full Size Bed
We’ve also added the front seat, and therefore bed, from another old van.
We’re both tall and the usual Commer sleeping arrangement of sleeping across the van would never work for us. You can
see from the pictures that we now have a most comfortable queen size bed in the van.
Electrical hook-up
Again, most Commers don’t
have a hookup so we had one added in. Included in the sale will be the fridge (in cupboard) that runs off the hookup. And
there are 2 standard powerpoints for you to plug in anything you like – lamps, hairdryers, stereo, laptop, phone chargers,
DVD etc etc.
Upholstery
The foam on all of the seats was replaced 6 months ago and then recovered with this terribly British checked fabric–
so absolutely no weird upholstery smells or horrible puffs of ‘foam smoke’ when you sit down.
And on to the important bits….
The Bodywork
Charley went through a complete overhall
18 months ago and all rust was taken out of bodywork, with any holes welded and fixed. He’s RUST-FREE!
And of course that deserved a new coat of paint… fresh green and old English
cream.
The Mechanics
This was a major bit of work and a professional mechanic did the following in 2011 (we have all receipts and paperwork):
New reconditioned engine installed
New Weber carburetor installed
New clutch kit installed
Various other tweaks and mods
The Bad Bits
Charley’s cab interior could be
smartened up, but we never bothered as we liked its simplicity and the cool brown vinyl doorcards matched the upholstery perfectly.
Nothing needs doing – just up to your personal taste.
Although not urgent, the rubber seal on the driver door could do with being replaced at some point but it’s
a small job and again, we’ve never bothered.
You’ll
need a new electric hookup cable but that’ll be about £15
People are constantly stopping us to talk about the van and shout out how much they love Charley when we drive past
(15 times in 4 minutes was the most ever). So it can take time to get places as everyone wants to have a chat. But the upside
of this is that other drivers are very nice to you and always let you go first!
